Mercurial Glove

// MERCURIAL ELITE TOUCH //

// MISSION //

// PROBLEMS TO SOLVE //

// INSIGHT & DIRECTION //

Goalkeepers are naturally conservative, and the industry has long reflected this risk-averse mentality. However, modern goalkeepers like Manuel Neuer and Emerson had pioneered a more aggressive, risk-taking style. It was time for an evolution to represent this new mentality and deliver technical advancements to keep pace with the modern game.

// DE-COMPLEXIFICATION //

This glove was a major departure from our usual construction methods. Early on, we focused on organizing the material and tackling construction challenges. The biggest test was figuring out how to assemble the pattern pieces without using the standard overlap cut-and-sew method.

// ITERATION & PROBLEM SOLVING //

To create new forms, we used scuba glove-inspired methods like neoprene, bonding, and chain stitching for a seamless fit. Collaborating with Nike material teams and factory partners, we pushed manufacturing limits. Ultimately, we chose a traditional method with a tighter fitting pattern and an iconic volt gusset.

// ATHLETE VALIDATION //

We sought feedback from athletes because the finished gloves felt so different. Professional goalkeepers were impressed but hesitant to switch from their trusted gloves, while youth goalkeepers were more curious and open to trying something new.

// FINISHED EXECUTION //

The glove looked dynamic and performed well, but professional adoption was low due to Nike's shift away from goalkeeper contracts. Future improvements were planned, but eventually shelved as other products took priority.

// RESULTS //

Although Nike never fully supported the Mercurial Elite glove, the rest of the goalkeeper industry took notice and quickly began imitating the new style and form innovations we pioneered. As they say, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery
